Dispelling the Myths: Renewables in the Grid
In December 2018, the International Solar Energy Society launched its latest publication "Dispelling the Myths - Renewables in the Grid ": a set of eight infographics dispelling the most commonly claimed myths about renewable energy integration.
When discussing renewable energy, knowledge is key, especially when confronted with commonly claimed shortcomings about renewables and it is ISES' objective to strengthen and support the urgent call for a renewable energy-based energy transformation by sharing the knowledge needed to achieve this revolutionary goal.
In addressing this objective, ISES has developed a series of infographics to clarify commonly claimed shortcomings about renewable energy. The first installment in this series addresses renewable energy integration into the grid. Each of the eight infographics introduces a common myth regarding grid integration, then dispels the myth based on latest research findings and real-world successful experiences of the integration of renewables into existing electrical grids.
In this webinar, ISES board member Steven Meyers welcomes expert panelist speakers Tyler McCandless (National Center for Atmospheric Research), Charlie Smith (Energy Systems Integration Group) and Mark Diesendorf (Cooperative Research Center for Low Carbon Living) to discuss the publications infographics, the myths they address and the technological knowledge that is used to debunk them. This webinar will last one hour and the attendees will have a chance to submit their questions to the speakers during the Q/A section.

Steven Meyers (Moderator)
Steven Meyers joined the ISES Executive Committee in 2016 and headed the Dispelling the Myths working group, putting forward this great publication. Steve is a mechanical engineer with a PhD in Solar and Renewable Low Carbon Heating and will present the Dispelling the Myths publication as well as moderate the webinar. Steve holds a global expertise in solar energy, energy efficiency and quantitative research and in 2018 joined Ecosystems, an engineering and construction firm specialized in complex energy ecosystems implementing turnkey energy projects to optimize the performance of institutional, commercial and industrial buildings.
Tyler McCandless
Tyler McCandless is a Machine Learning Scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado USA. After earning his doctorate, Tyler worked in the private sector performing energy and portfolio risk modeling for large US and international utilities and earned his Energy Risk Professional (ERP) Certification by the Global Association of Risk Professionals. Tyler is responsible for providing high level machine learning expertise to various projects in the Research Applications Laboratory (RAL) at NCAR, including current projects to use machine learning techniques to improve wind and solar power prediction based on surface and satellite based weather observations.
J. Charles Smith
Charles Smith is a member of the IEEE Power and Energy Society; a member of CIGRE, the International Council on Large Electric Systems; a member of the American Meteorological Society; a US representative to the IEA Wind Annex Task 25 on Design and Operation of Power Systems with Large Amounts of Wind Power, and a Fellow of the IEEE. He is a guest editor for the IEEE Power and Energy magazine, and a past editor for the IEEE Transactions on Sustainable Energy. Mr. Smith received the IEEE PES Ramakumar Family Renewable Energy Excellence Award in 2014.
Mark Diesendorf
Mark Diesendorf, BSc (Hons), PhD, is Honorary Associate Professor in Environmental Humanities at UNSW Sydney and Education Program Leader of the Australian Cooperative Research Centre for Low Carbon Living. Previously he was Professor of Environmental Science and Founding Director of the Institute for Sustainable Futures at University of Technology Sydney. Currently his principal research is on integrating renewable energy on a large scale into electricity supply-demand systems and on energy technology assessment.
