About EuroSun:
Initiated by ISES, the International Solar Energy Society in 1996, EuroSun has been held on a bi-annual basis in cities all across Europe. Recent EuroSun conferences have taken place in Limassol, Cyprus (2024), Kassel, Germany (2022), Rapperswil, Switzerland (2018), Palma de Mallorca, Spain (2016) and Aix-les-Bains, France (2014).
EuroSun 2026 is jointly organized by ISES - the International Solar Energy Society and the IEA Solar Heating and Cooling Programme, IEA SHC.
For 2026, the organizers are especially pleased to announce the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE as the Scientific Host of the conference.
2026 also marks the 30th brithday of the EuroSun conferences and we will celebrate a solar homecoming as the first ever EuroSun - EuroSun 1996 - took place in Freiburg Germany, home to both the ISES headquarters and Fraunhofer ISE.
Over the years, EuroSun has become a well-established and highly successful conference for the solar community welcoming guests from all around the world.
At EuroSun 2026, we are looking forward to welcoming solar researchers and practitioners, experts, industry representatives and students from all around the world. The programme will feature technical sessions on the conference themes, high-level keynotes by expert speakers, plenary sessions, workshops, two technical tours and more. The organizers are also working hard to offer a range of programme highlights to our young attendees such as a special Masters Course in Solar Energy and dedicated networking opportunities with senior experts from research and industry.
1996 - 2026: 30 Years of EuroSun!
EuroSun 2026 will mark the 30th birthday of the EuroSun conference series - a conference to celebrate how far solar has come and to look ahead to a bright solar future!
Almost 30 years ago, in 1996, on invitation of Prof. Joachim Luther, head of Fraunhofer ISE at the time, the ISES headquarters had just moved to Freiburg all the way from Australia and the new team in Freiburg had just taken up residence in Villa Tannheim - home to the ISES headquarters to this day.
In September 1996, the first-ever EuroSun conference then was held in Freiburg: an immediate success with 1000 attendees, 150 presented papers, 400 posters and registrants from 47 countries and its own industrial exhibition. The conference was honoured by the visit of Angela Merkel, Environment Minister at the time and later German chancellor.
