EuroSun 2016 proceedings available
The 11th ISES EuroSun 2016 conference proceedings are now available on the ISES conference proceedings data base: proceedings.ises.org.
The EuroSun conference series began 21 years ago in 1996 in Freiburg, Germany, the location of the International Solar Energy Society, ISES, headquarters. At that time it was already clear that the EuroSun conference was going to be a major event for the European renewable energy community. The conferences went from strength to strength, being held in a different European city every second year and attracting local as well as international participants.
For the 2016 edition of EuroSun, the beautiful city of Palma in the Spanish island of Mallorca was chosen. Visitors from all over the world attend and received a warm welcome at the impressive Bellver Castle. The day continued with technical tours of renewable energy sites on the island.
The conference spanned four days of key note speeches, plenary discussions, forums, oral and poster sessions, workshops and a special brokerage event. Prof. Hans-Martin Henning, (Fraunhofer ISE, Germany) the first plenary speaker spoke about pathways to transform the German energy system by 2050. In a forum on Solar energy research and innovation projects in Europe, Szilvia Bozoki, Eicke Weber (Fraunhofer ISE), Hannah Murdoch (REN21) and Daniel Mugnier (TECSOL) discuss the decline in large scale European projects and investment in renewable energy.
A solar cooking workshop, led by Celestino Ruivo from Portugal showed participants how to build a solar cooker from scratch. A forum which sparked a lot of discussion was “Solar energy in Europe, current market development situation”. Speakers were Andreas Häberle (PSE) Ken Guthrie (IEA SHC), Adel El Gammal (Becquerel Institute) and Robin Welling (TiSUN). The forum speakers addressed topics such as market competitiveness between PV technologies and solar heating and cooling technologies. A special invited speaker session was by Prof. Antonio Luque, winner of the ISES Karl Böer Award in 2015. Prof Luque spoke about advancements in band gap materials in solar cells and raising efficiencies using innovative approaches.
The EuroSun2016 was an exceptionally comfortable platform for networking. Participants enjoyed viewing posters, mingling at coffee breaks, coming together for lunch and exchanging ideas in a relaxed and enjoyable setting. A highlight of the conference, was the gala dinner, where participants relaxed and networked in a historic setting. In the closing ceremony, students from the Masters Course “Solar Energy” held parallel to the EuroSun 2016 conference presented their results. The course was led by Prof. Klaus Vajen who, in his key note speech addressed the need for more teacher-training in renewable energy.
In total over 300 participants attended the conference from 57 countries. Victor Martinez Moll, Chair of the Scientific Committee summarizes the event "It's been a successful edition of the ISES EuroSun congress with meaningful presentations and discussions. Organizationally things went very smoothly. Thank you to everyone for their commitment, from the presenters and the session chairs to the technical staff."
The closing ceremony was addressed by Jaume Carot, Vice rector of the University of the Balearic Islands, UIB,, hosts of the EuroSun 2016 and Miquel Ensenya, President of the Council of Mallorca. Both praised the organization of the event and importance of the conference and it’s theme “solar energy for buildings and industry” to the local community in Mallorca and internationally.
