Global Energy Systems based on 100% Renewable Energy
ISES invites you to join this month's webinar in which we welcome Christian Breyer, Professor for Solar Economy at LUT University, Finland and Hans-Josef Fell, President of the Energy Watch Group for a webinar on their latest joint publication, the study on Global Energy Systems based on 100% Renewable Energy.
The study, published this April, is the first of its kind to outline a 1.5°C scenario with a cost-effective, cross-sectoral, technology-rich global 100% renewable energy system that does not build on negative CO2 emission technologies. The scientific modelling study simulates a total global energy transition in the electricity, heat, transport and desalination sectors by 2050. It is based on four and a half years of research and analysis of data collection, as well as technical and financial modelling by 14 scientists. This proves that the transition to 100% renewable energy is economically competitive with the current fossil and nuclear-based system, and could reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the energy system to zero even before 2050.
The study concludes with political recommendations for a rapid integration of renewable energy and zero greenhouse gas emission technologies. Among the most important measures suggested by the report are promoting sector coupling, private investments (which should ideally be incentivised with fixed feed-in tariffs), tax breaks and legal privileges with simultaneous discontinuation of subsidies for coal and fossil fuels. According to the report, the transition to a global energy system based on 100% renewables can be achieved before 2050 if a strong policy framework is implemented.
ISES Vice President Eicke Weber will moderate the webinar and we are especially looking forward to the Q/A section for the audience to share their questions on this important study.
The webinar will last one hour and a recording will be made available afterwards. ISES members benefit from exclusive access to all past webinar recordings and presentations via the membership area.
Speakers
Christian Breyer
Christian Breyer is Professor for Solar Economy at LUT University and Co-author of the study to be discussed in this webinar. In his work, he focusses on energy transition studies towards 100% renewables matching the Paris Agreement and United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Christian Breyer puts a special focus on solar energy, wind energy, batteries, hydrogen, CCU, PtX, CO2 direct air capture with all research being done in global-local resolution. Prior to his time at LUT Uni, Christian Breyer worked on R&D road mapping and strategic market development and held the position of Managing Director at the Lemoine Institut, Berlin.
Hans-Josef Fell
Hans-Josef Fell, President of the Energy Watch Group since 2014 focusses his work on the expansion and deployment of renewables to reach 100% renewable energy worldwide. As a member of the German Parliament from 1998 -2013 and faction spokesperson for Energy Policy, Hans-Josef Fell is author of the Renewable Energy Sources Act. At the Energy Watch Group, he advises governments and parliaments worldwide on the renewable energy transition and analyses global energy developments. In 2018, Hans-Josef Fell won the prestigious Lui Che Woo Prize honoring his lifetime achievements for the Energy Transition.
Eicke Weber - Moderator
Professor Weber is Vice President of ISES and till the end of 2016 he was Director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE and Professor for Physics / Solar Energy at the Albert-Ludwigs-University of Freiburg, Germany. The topic of Prof. Weber's own research is semiconductor materials science for photovoltaic and microelectronic applications. In 2014, he received the Zayed Future Energy Prize from the Crown Prince of the United Arab Emirates on behalf of Fraunhofer ISE. In 2015, he was elected president of the Association of European Renewable Energy Research Centers EUREC. He served as founding president of the German Energy Storage Association BVES (2012-16), and is a member of the German Academy of Science and Engineering. In early 2019, Prof. Weber has been awarded the SOLAR FUTURE.TODAY Visionary Influencer Award 2019 in the category of Yearly Lifetime Achievement Award.
