ISES is now an accredited observer of the Green Climate Fund
The Green Climate Fund creates a remarkable opportunity to further the transformation of the world's energy system to more effective use of ultimately 100% renewable, CO2-emission free energy. This objective is very much in line with the objectives of the International Solar Energy Society, ISES, whose members worldwide include leading experts especially in the field of solar energy, photovoltaics and solar thermal energy harvesting.
The Green Climate Fund (GCF) was established with a mission to advance the goal of keeping the temperature increase on our home planet below 2 degrees Celsius. The Fund is a unique global initiative to respond to climate change by investing into low-emission and climate-resilient development. The GCF was established by 194 governments to limit or reduce greenhouse gas emissions in developing countries, and to help adapt vulnerable societies to the unavoidable impacts of climate change. Given the urgency and seriousness of the challenge, the Fund is mandated to make an ambitious contribution to the united global response to climate change.
Dr. David Renné, ISES President says: "The Green Climate Fund is an essential facility to help developing countries transform their energy systems into clean, affordable renewable energy, an essential step in achieving the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement. ISES is very pleased for the opportunity to support the Fund’s decision-making process as an accredited observer.”
The Board of Directors of ISES hope to see funds from the Green Climate Fund allocated to finance worldwide renewable energy projects, including solar energy projects, which might be established with the help of the Fund, and later sold to investors, replenishing the Fund and allowing further projects to be initiated. These types of projects require excellent expertise to avoid risking resources in poorly designed or poorly executed projects, including technical due diligence, financial due diligence, and social due diligence to assure acceptance within the local population.
The members of ISES and their research organizations worldwide stand ready to offer their expertise in helping to direct some of the Green Climate Fund in this direction.
Prof. Eicke Weber, ISES Vice-President says: “I am very pleased that the International Solar Energy Society will now - as an accredited organization - be in the inner loop of the Green Climate Fund. We would like to use this opportunity to help identify worthy investments for this fund, allowing the acceleration of the global transformation process of our economies to ultimately use 100% renewable energy.”
In the past few years, ISES has drastically accelerated its efforts to promote how an energy transformation towards 100% renewable energy can meet the climate challenge. Through high-level conferences, free webinars, international publications and key partnerships, ISES demonstrates again and again how renewable energy technology is a solution to dangerous climate change.
The Society has partnered with international organizations such as the Climate Action Network, REN21, IRENA, the Global Solar Council, the IEA SHC and IEA PVPS, the International Renewable Energy Alliance, Power For All, Solar Cookers International, and many more. Recently, ISES became a founding member of the Global 100% Renewable Energy Platform. Board Members and staff of the Society regularly attend the UNFCCC COP events, holding side events with partner organizations showing the advantages and potential of renewables working together.
Becoming an accredited observer to the Green Climate Fund is an important step for the Society to strengthen its activities and influence in the transformation to a 100% renewable energy world.
About The International Solar Energy Society (ISES)
For over 60 years the members of ISES have undertaken the research that has helped the renewable energy industry to grow. ISES, through its knowledge sharing and community building programs, helps its global membership provide the technical answers to accelerate the transformation to 100% renewable energy and thereby achieve the following vision: The International Solar Energy Society (ISES) envisions a world with 100% renewable energy for everyone used wisely and efficiently.
