Powering Renewables: Women in Solar Energy III

The International Solar Energy Society, ISES, envisions a world with 100% renewable energy for all, used efficiently and wisely. One of the biggest steps towards achieving this goal is the empowerment of women working in solar research, development and the solar industries.

As the largest international solar organization worldwide, ISES is committed to equality and sees it as one of the integral pillars to a successful energy transition. Women have held leading positions within ISES, as presidents, board members and team members - working as engineers, researchers and developers, they have shaped the ISES profile and together with their colleagues contributed to the success of ISES on a global scale.

The aim of this webinar is to highlight the perspectives of women working in solar energy, their professional as well as personal experience, their achievements and to demonstrate that a successful energy transformation can only be achieved when renewables become powered by equality!

The webinar is free for all to attend and the recording of the webinar as well as the webinar presentations will be publicly accessible for a few days after the webinar. Unlimited access to all ISES webinars and the presentations is an exclusive membership benefit for ISES members - find out more here!

Speakers

Marlene Brown

Marlene Brown is Past President of the New Mexico Solar Energy Association where she served for 4 years and remains on the advisory board. She has taught photovoltaic hands-on design and installation classes for 25 years, installing systems on non-profit and community based organizations. Marlene also has co-taught many PV hands-on classes for both men and women. She teaches classes through non-profit organizations, and occasionally for local colleges and community colleges. She has been active in the American Solar Energy Society (ASES) for many years. For the ASES annual conference she created a “Woman in Solar Energy (WISE) forum” which she still organizes and chairs. The forum highlights women in solar from many aspects and angles: women that are technically involved in the field, involved in education or legislation, opening doors for women and the technology.

Christine Lins

In 2017, Christine Lins co-founded GWNET, the Global Women’s Network for the Energy Transition, which aims at empowering women in the sustainable energy sector and serves on the ISES Board since 2018. Christine has worked in the renewable energy sector for over twenty years: graduating with a masters' degree in international economics, she began her career at a regional Austrian energy agency, working on projects on renewable energy and energy efficiency. From there, Christine transferred to the European Renewable Energy Council in Brussels. In 2011, Christine was appointed as Executive Secretary of REN21 and convinced that more gender balance is needed to help advance sustainable energy.

Paulette Middleton - Moderator

Paulette Middleton is member of the ISES Board of Directors as well as member of the American Solar Energy Society (the USA Section of ISES). Her professional experience includes leadership positions at University of Texas (PhD Chemistry 1973), National Center for Atmospheric Research, Atmospheric Sciences Research Center at the State University of New York at Albany, Science & Policy Associates, Inc., and RAND.  Her ongoing activities include Global Emissions IniAtive (GEIA) coordinator since 1991 and science-based environment/energy advisor to a wide variety of public and private, and stakeholder consortium clients since 2002 through her company Panorama Pathways.

Kathlen Schneider

Kathlen Schneider is a researcher in solar photovoltaics and energy efficiency topics with a focus on sizing and simulating PV systems integrated to buildings performance, energy efficiency in buildings simulation, distributed generation regulation context with a focus on community solar. Currently she works at the Solar Energy Research Lab Fotovoltaica-UFSC, where she is responsible for leading projects on solar cooperatives in Brazil. She is also a mentee from GWNET’s Mentorship Program and co-founder of the Brazilian Women’s Network in Solar Energy (MESol Network).
