Reflections on COP 25

The International Solar Energy Society, through Dave Renné, immediate past President of ISES, and Jennifer McIntosh, ISES Executive Secretary, generously invited me to represent ISES at the 25th United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Conference of the Parties (COP), held in Madrid, Spain on 2-13 December 2019.  With just 4 weeks’ notice, COP 25 had been moved from Santiago, Chile to Madrid, Spain due to civil unrest in Chile.  It was truly an honor to serve as Observer Delegate for the International Solar Energy Society at COP25, where the 197 country delegates that are signatories to the Paris Agreement discussed, negotiated, and renewed their commitment to address climate change. I have been involved in solar energy, nationally and internationally beginning in the mid-1970s, so I was particularly interested in supporting ISES’ vision to addressing the climate crisis through rapid adoption of renewable energy technologies worldwide to decarbonize all of our end-use energy consumption.

The objective of the UNFCCC is to stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that would prevent dangerous anthropogenic interference with the climate system. (...)

EuroSun 2020 - Call for Abstracts and Keynote Speakers


From 1 - 4 September 2020, ISES is pleased to present EuroSun 2020 - the 13th International Conference on Solar Energy for Buildings and Industry taking place in Athens, Greece.

EuroSun 2020 will offer a platform to discuss the latest developments with leading solar energy experts as well as policy makers and industry representatives. The programme will include distinguished keynote speakers in plenary sessions, specialists meetings in breakout sessions and poster exhibitions as well as social events where you will have the opportunity to network, meet old friends and to make new ones.

Call for Abstracts: 

We cordially invite you to submit your latest and best results as an abstract for EuroSun 2020.

Call for Keynote Speaker Proposals:

For the first time, the organisers of the EuroSun 2020 are accepting nominations for keynote speakers. We are aiming to encourage the participation of the greater ISES community in the development of the EuroSun 2020 conference program. We are seeking nominations for the most respected, knowledgeable and insightful  experts to provide insights into the major issues influencing the progress in solar and renewable energy development, applications, policy, financing, or other areas relevant to the EuroSun 2020. The International Organising Committee will also consider gender and geographical balance when selecting speakers and developing the conference programme.
 

If you are interested to submit a keynote speaker nomination, please read the nomination criteria available on the conference homepage carefully - deadline for all nominations is 31 March 2020.
 
SWC50 - February Newsletter

In 1970 solar research pioneers met at the first International Solar Energy Society (ISES) Conference in Melbourne, Australia. ISES is commemorating this anniversary with a special event called the Solar World Congress at 50 (SWC50), to be held in Melbourne, Australia from 2 - 4 December 2020.

Regular event newsletters will keep you up to date on the event, the programme, speakers and much more. This month, the organisers of SWC50 are happy to introduce "The Century of Solar Display" to you through which the event will bring together stories and faces of the solar success story of the past 50 years. Additionally, this month's SWC50 newsletter also introduces the first group of partners and supporters joining the event coming together to celebrate and shape the next 50 years od solar!

1st International Conference on Agrophotovoltaic
ISES Institution Member Fraunhofer ISE, the Institute for Solar Energy Systems announces the first international conference on agrophotovoltaics for August 2020.

AgriVoltaics2020 will take place in Perpignan, France from 26-28 August, 2020 under the motto “Launching Agrivoltaics World Wide.” The conference will address different aspects of the technology, from research to applications. Specialists in the areas of plant science and agronomy, hydrology, solar energy as well as research on systemic issues or socio-economic studies will attend.

ASES SOLAR 20/20 - VIP Passes + NABCEP Courses
ASES SOLAR 20/20, the 49th Annual National Solar Conference by the American Solar Energy Society (ASES) for the first time this year will feature special VIP Passes including a full conference pass as well as access to all ASES events and luncheons. 

Solar20/20 will also offer courses by the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP).

GWNET Study "Women for Sustainable Energy"
GWNET, the Global Women's Network for the Energy Transition has launched the "Women for Sustainable Energy: Strategies to Foster Women's Talent for Transformational Change" study.
This study was commissioned to answer the question ‘What can we do to increase women’s employment in the sustainable energy sector?’ and examines:
● How well women are currently integrated into the corporate sustainable energy sector;
● Which obstacles women encounter;
● What recommendations – building on existing experiences and emerging best-practice – can be put forward to promote women’s participation on par with men’s in sustainable energy.

Christine Lins, Executive Director and Founding Member of GWNET, and ISES Board Member, said: “We are thrilled to debut our first study on women working in the corporate sustainable energy sector. We believe that this study will shine a light on some of the most pressing obstacles to the attraction, retention, and advancement of women in the corporate sector, ultimately spurring positive action towards women’s equal inclusion in the sustainable energy sector.”

APVI welcomes new Chair 
APVI, the Australian PV Institute welcomes Dr. Chris Fell of Australia's national science research agency CSIRO as new APVI Chair. At CISRO, Chris Fell established CSIRO's PV research program, now operating commercially as PV Performance Laboratory, the only accredited PV measurement facility in the Southern Hemisphere. Additionally, Dr. Fell is Australia's representative on the IEC international standards committee for PV modules.
 
WWEA: Dangerous Trend Challenging the Success of Wind Power
In a new article, WWEA, the World Wind Energy Association, ISES Partner in the RENAlliance warns of a dangerous trend that is challenging the success of wind power around the globe - concentration and monopolisation.

Stefan Gsänger, Secretary General of the WWEA highlights that even though renewable energies are understood to be decentralised energy sources, the global wind sector at the same time faces a trend towards centralisation, in some cases even towards monopolistic structures.

Solar Decathlon Europe 2021 - Teams selected
The organisers of the Solar Decathlon Europe 2021, SDE21 are happy to announce that the competing teams for the 2021 challenge have been selected. 
18 international teams have been selected by a high-profile panel of experts to participate in the Solar Decathlon Europe 21. The first urban edition of the renowned competition in sustainable building and living will take place in Wuppertal, Germany. It is hosted by the University of Wuppertal and supported by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy.
ISES supported the application by the University of Wuppertal to host SDE21 through an official letter and ISES Board Member Dr. Andreas Häberle, Director of the Institute for Solar Technology (SPF) will participate in the competitions jury on behalf of ISES.

New GSC website
GSC, the Global Solar Council has launched their new website. With a new look and improved legibility of content for mobile devices, thanks to the responsive architecture, the website offers more content and information on the solar photovoltaic sector.

The new site is part of a refreshed approach to communications by the Global Solar Council that has also seen the GSC active on the main social media platforms: LinkedIn, Twitter and most recently on Facebook.

SCI, the Solar Cookers International welcomes Dr. Shishpai Rawat as SCI's new Board President. Dr. Rawat has over 30 years of extensive experience in the semiconductor, education, and information technology service industry and a passion for improving human and environmental health in world regions of great need.

IHA launches assessment fund
IHA, the International Hydropower Association, ISES partner in the RENAlliance has launched a $1m assessment fund for sustainable hydropower projects.
The Hydropower Sustainability ESG Assessment Fund will award a total of 1 million Swiss Francs (USD 1.02m) to 40 or more hydropower projects between 2020 and 2024. The initiative is managed by the International Hydropower Association’s sustainability division and funded by Switzerland’s State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO).

Solar Cat

Originally conceived as the inevitable "passing of the torch" of solar energy knowledge and stewardship from cats to humans. More recent revisionist interpretations view it as observation of the race between (human use of) the sun rising and sea level rising.
